In only a few instances have I been able to discover the authorship of any song. They seem to have sprung up as quietly and mysteriously as does the grass on the plains - John Lomax, Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads, 1910.

This project consists mainly of songs I have fallen for across many years of hanging around in folk clubs across the UK. Although at some point I obviously sat down and learned each of these songs, I've approached these recordings by deliberately not revisiting my original sources or (with one exception) researching others' recorded versions - seeking an approximation of the "folk process". In other words, all mistakes are mine and, in this context, completely legitimate.

I felt like I'd carried these songs around with me for years, rarely performing any, but promising myself that, at some point, I'd knock out that folky album - how hard could it be? Having now wrestled them into recorded format, let's just say I have a newly-deepened respect for these songs, for their original composers, and for any and all who have kept them alive for me to fall in love with all over again.
